Cooking Musts

Every magazine has a must list, and I have decided to throw my lot in with them on Fridays. This week, because it is less hot, I am back in the kitchen. Here are the first Friday Musts:

The Spice Stack. Amazing. It holds 60 little bottles or 30 big ones, or a mix of sizes in between. And it fits in my cabinet. I love it, because my spices are everywhere, because I can't get enough from
Penzeys.com
The fragrances are amazing when I open the box. My current favorites are the apple pie spice (which I use on everything from bread to beef), Rocky Mountain Seasoning, and Sandwich Sprinkle. And they send free samples when you order a medium amount of spices. The catalog is full of recipes, and they are in their second year of publishing a great magazine, called Penzey's ONE. I love it.

Oh, Nigella, I love you. And this book never fails me. Especially when it is warm outside and I need fresh ingredients in my body. We are currently living on the Hasselback Potatoes
and the Chocolate Raspberry Pavlova

And every day we temper our Hasselhoff and Merenguey indulgences with some good, fresh bread made with King Arthur Flour. I love everything from them. The recipe that I use for bread is the same as is on the bag--and it is amazing. I have been trying to find the perfect bread recipe for years, and I think we are getting very close with this one. I also really like their sticky bun sugar and their sweet dough flavoring. And the glazed bread loaf pans are fab. And so is their bread proofer. And I am dying to get the yogurt maker...
6. Speaking of bread and King Arthur, try this recipe:
Chocolate Fudge Monkey Bread

Finally, my most secret ingredient for successful cooking? That would be the DVR playing

Because the play kitchen only holds her attention for so long...

Nigella! She and I have the same cooking philosophy--I love her. Who doesn't? I dare you, you Nigella-haters, show your face!

And a second on a DVR being a successful kitchen ingredient, holy COW I couldn't cook dinner without it.

Ok .. now I'm feeling separated at birth again!

Penzey’s is to die for, King Arthur is fabu – and Nigella?

Oh my – I think I might cry … I worship at her alter every time I enter a kitchen. She is completely responsible for my ability to make truly delish, yet super simple, BĂ©arnaise (something I was always intimidated by until I saw her do it). I love her beyond words.

Can hardly wait for next week's musts :)

I need to known about a thing called sticky bun sugar.

And since I'm almost out of cinnamon and ready to place another order with Pensey's, how many is considered a medium amount of spices? And do you mean the cinnamon, nutmeg and bay leaves samples or have I been missing out on something more?

On, and most importantly (well, no, frankly the sticky bun sugar is most important), do the Penzey's spice bottles fit in the spice rack?

p.s. Miss July girl is hawt!

(of course I meant Penzey's)

The sticky bun sugar has some sort of powdered dairy in it, so it sticks to the dough really well. It rules. And the grains are really big. I use it when I make Lucky's Cinnamon Rolls. And I always buy at least three or four Penzeys spices at a time, and they send me a "trial" size, which is th size of the smallest bottle, of whatever they feel like. Which is how I know about the apple pie spice. I never get the bay leaves with my orders, so you must place much bigger orders than I do. And the spice stack holds the small and medium bottles perfectly. And my bottle of Sweet Dough Flavor from King Arthur.

Good to know. Thanks!

(Of course now we need the recipe for Lucky's Cinnamon rolls.)

I swore I had posted it on a blog somewhere (help me out, peeps). I love me the Pampered Chef Dill Combo for the chicken pasta salad but would try Penzey's if they had a smiliar version.

Me love's Nigella. Have an autographed photo framed in my kitchen (purchased on eBay, not acquired in person, dangit).

That does sound good. I have to say I love our King Arthur Flour Cookie Companion Cookbook. It's so wonderful to have a cookbook devoted to cookies. Though its troubling that we've now found a need to keep corn syrup in the house.

We always have corn syrup so we can make the Scotcharoos at any time. And the Baking handbook is an awesome King Arthur addition. You should get it.
