Because it's my Bubble

I don't watch the news. Not ever, unless there is something breaking, like 9/11 or Michael Jackson. The only way I know it's breaking is if someone calls me or it comes up on my Twitter feed.

I don't get the paper. I find out about all the current events I want to know about from Entertainment and Us Weeklies. If I remember, the Daily Show.

Confession: I didn't see images of Katrina until about three weeks into the coverage. I had heard there was some something going on. And then one day I was like "oh, yeah. I meant to look that up."

Horribly uninformed, you say? Yup. Did I give money anyway? Yup. (Do I still give money to Louis, the hobo outside of Costco who has a sign that says he is from Katrina? Yup.)

On the internet, I use extreme discretion in my blog reading. I employ my Google reader like crazy. And I ditch blogs all the time.

I ditch them when:

  • Their politics differ from mine and they can't keep civil about it
  • Their religious beliefs differ from mine and they can't keep civil about it
  • They refer to our president without using his title
  • They speak ill of people and things that are sacred to me
  • They are mean to others
  • They post pictures of EVERY FREAKING STEP OF THE RECIPE, for Pete's sake, I know what baking soda is and can measure it myself without having to look at an artistic shot of it in the teaspoon you are killing me
  • Their blog focus evolves to a focus that no longer interests me
  • They post too many Twilight-themed events
  • I meet them in real life and it turns out I don't like them at all

Judgmental, you say? Definitely.

I will let you in on a little secret:

I get to judge. I get to be as awful and hateful and judgey as I want.
When I leave my home I strive with a strive that is more than a strive to be kind and tolerant and loving to everyone I meet. I give the benefit of the doubt to complete jackholes, listen to incredibly uninformed rants from strangers, love the unlovable, and do my best to leave everyone a little happier than when I found them.
But not in my house.
I don't have to listen to any crap I don't want to hear.
I don't have to read any crap I don't want to read.
I don't have to be informed or know about anything that takes the peace from my soul.
I just don't.

I built this bubble, dagnabit (bodaggit) and I protect the monkey out of it.

Here's the other little secret:
YOU don't have to read things that make you angry.
How can you tell if they make you angry?
You feel like you have to leave a hurtful comment anonymously.

Build your own bubble.

I totally give you permission. Turn off the news, change the channel, unfollow.
