It'll Rot Your Brain

We have reached the inevitable* point in which Jooj starts understanding commercials. When asked, this year, what she wants for Christmas, I am going to just respond "Anything that is on television."

I know all of the things I am supposed to think about commercials; they can be pandering, blatantly false, promote stereotypes, etc.

But, really, I still have some fond memories of commercials from when I was a kid. Please to observe:

Cal Worthington and his Dog Spot
This was a huge local ad in Southern California. He did a million commercials, and his "dog" was never a dog. It was always fun to see what he would do next. As I was searching for a clip, a bunch came up from Oklahoma, Sacramento, and Washington, leading me to believe that Cal Worthington is the richest man alive, and possibly a member of The Pentaverite.

Pete Ellis Dodge
If you ever want to see if someone is being truthful about hailing from Southern California in the 1970s and 1980s, just sing the words "Pete Ellis Dodge..." If they can't finish the jingle, they are lying about their roots.

Shasta
I wanna Pop pop pop pop pop pop...

Anti-Drug PSAs
Man, if W and I don't reference this one at least once a month, it is a fluke. Chime in.

C&R Clothiers
Oh, my great good gravy, this series was phenomenal. They took these "grubby" (read: "sweaty and delicious") men and then put them in suits. It took everyone by storm. And they were all gay. And it was a big deal.

What about you? What commercials shaped your childhood?

*Yes, I know that people who don't watch TV don't have kids watching commercials. They also don't go to heaven.

We explained the "I learned it from watching you, Dad" commercial to our oldest a couple days ago. Can't remember why, but we couldn't stop saying it.

Why doesn't Shasta advertise anymore? Have they just given up? They were totally in the game at one point with that hit song!

I'm so showing these to my husband!! He'll finally understand so much more about America that only these can teach.

I loved the doublemint gum commercials.

I say, "I learned it by watching YOU!" to my husband at least once a week.

I remember the Palmolive commercials with Madge. "You're soaking in it!" My sister and I used to act out that commercial all the time (we had to use plain, old water, though).

Life cereal with Mikey. I also remember when everyone thought Mikey died from eating Pop Rocks and Coca Cola.

I seriously almost pee'd with excitement when I saw the Cal Worthington commercial on here. ALL of these are straight from my SoCal childhood! I was fuzzy on Pete Ellis Dodge until I watched the clip.... and now I'm going to be singing that jingle ALL DAY. PS- I'm sorry, but life is not complete without Madge and Mr. Whipple in it.

well, I've read the latest, since the oct 3 post, and I think this is pretty healthy, since you can get it out of your system without hitting your kids or husband! (I hope!)I usually write in a journal, same effect. I'm grateful for a DVR, so I am in charge of what I watch! Any way, we do what we can to cope! Love you....

An ad announcing that the show Golden Girls was changing nights, "Movin' Movin' Movin', Golden Girls is Movin', to 8 o' clock on Saturday Niiight!"

Also, the commercial for the game "Mouse Trap".

Oh, and Mentos ads. They looked and acted like 80's ads but I think they were running in the 90's?

Also: "Packed with peanuts, Snickers really satisfies." And then it would show someone in a gym locker room with their healthy (peanuts!) post-workout snack of a candy bar.

And speaking of gym locker-room commercials, PertPlus. Wow, that saves TONS of time when you're A Busy Woman Of The Eighties.
