So, one of the few benefits to having W gone for the holidays is that I can Grizwold up the place as early as I want. Being a Holiday Traditionalist by religion, though, I have put off the decorating until as close to Thanksgiving as I can without needing to go to a Christmas Confessional. The music, on the other hand? Since September.
Here are my favorite holiday albums:
Barenaked for the Holidays--Barenaked Ladies. This is truly my current favorite. Probably because I have been on a BNL kick lately (don't blame it on Yokie.) and have been filling the ipod with all of the albums. But this one has just the right amount of pathos mixed with whimsy mixed with Judaica.
Sufjan Stevens: Songs for Christmas. I like this one because it makes me want to slit my wrists a little bit, and then drink some cocoa. Which is really appropriate for the holiday season, if you are being truly honest with yourself and your experience. Also because the whole album flows together from front to start, like those old Beach Boys studio albums. But without the wierd animal sounds.
Gifts--Cherie Call. Part of my new lease on life involves no longer trying to be cool. So I admit I like me some sappy Mo Music. But Cherie Call is a gifted folk-singer in her own right, which makes this less guilty than, say,
Home For Christmas--Amy Grant. Yes, I know she thinks I am going to Hell. Even though SHE is an adulteress and I am just someone who believes that you need faith AND works. But that Breath of Heaven gets me every time. And the heavily abridged Handel's Messiah? Great to sing along with in the car.
Mary's Lullaby: Christmas Songs for Bedtime. We have actually not stopped listening to this since ~J gave it to us two Christmases (or one?) ago. I really want Scott Wiley to put out a lullaby album in the Espanish. Someone put a bug in his ear. Tell him it would make dinero.
December--George Winston. This one just reminds me of growing up Johnson in the YL before the fires. I love it. As does...
The Christmas Song: Nat King Cole.
What's on your holiday play list? Anything good?

If you have the courage to come out about Cherie Call I can come out about Barbra, Dan and yes, I know everyone disses it, but I like most of Michael, too.
But this is one of my favorites.
you hath inspired me to go purchase some new muzick
and I love BNL too, and Scott Wiley's stuff, he is a lullaby genius.
I don't have much Christmas music, so 007 is in charge, but the current most requested song in the house in the Chipmunks Christmas Carol....gotta love the classics!
I have been listening to Punk Goes Christmas (an old classic) with gems like Oi! to the world. But I'm just a big sap. Mostly, to keep my mind off the holidays, I'm listening to Slayer.
yes, on the forgotten carols and the grinch (jim carrey) soundtrack.
But always....johnny mathis, andy williams, & anne murray.
We own of 100 Christmas CD's. But I have not pulled any of them out yet. Maybe that is why I am so humbug this year...
I go rid of all my jewish Christmas cd's last year. It just didn't feel right have someone who doesn't believe that Christ was born singing to me about it.

I'm going to go listen to your list. I love Nat King Cole... Karen Carpenter... The Forgotten Carols... Amy Grant...
I also love MoTab... we just wanted a DVD of one of those big huge Christmas shows with Audra... something.
I love Handel's Messiah... Nutcracker. Just wrap me up and pinch me. (sorry...no idea what that means... it's sleep deprivation-speak)
ps. I can't stand most of the pop stars/r&b wannabe Christmas music. I say...stick with the standards.
word verification... hersency (heresyy?)
we're kind of kindred christmas-music listeners. I grew up with George Winston, haven't heard of him from someone else in a long while.
We've been listening to Mary's Lullaby non-stop, too (my choice, not the kids') -- Little Drummer Boy is my current favorite track. And one of my favorite-favorites this season is God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (BNL & Sarah Mclachlan (sp?)). I think Jewel's Christmas album is fun. Gypsy Soul (a Christian singer/band, I think??) has a great version of What Child is This.
And I like your new lease on life. Cool is overrated.
ps - i'm also silly for Willie Nelson's "Here Comes Santa Claus" -- so twangy and good.
Ooh--Little Drummer boy is my second-least favorite carol. My first least is "Do you Hear What I Hear for Forty Verses?" I don't like the long ones. But other than that, I am with you, EmilyAnne. Welcome!
I really like Bleak Midwinter. Same sentiment as Drummer Boy but with some pathos and much shorter.
No Chipmunks, just because I spent so many years in retail. That one is one the mall repeat CD.
I forgot about Guster's "Donde Esta Santa Claus?" That one is awesome. I need to pull it out of storage.
The Carpenters is my absolute favorite. I can listen to it over and over and not get tired of it. My second favorite is the Osmonds--I know! But it takes me back to Christmas as a kid.
P.S. Did you read Havana Nocturne because you heard the interview with the author on NPR, or because you're just so cool that you picked it up yourself?
I saw it in the "New Books" section of the library. I am almost that cool.
